Hi-tech gadgets to track lions at Gir

Gujarat government in India is procuringgadgets like GPS, automated sensor gridand night vision devices to track lions andkeep poachers at bay at the Gir NationalPark. The task force that was formed forthe purpose has proposed to use GPS-basedsystem for surveillance tracking, animaltracking and also tracking of vehiclescoming inside the Gir Sanctuary. It isenvisaged that all field level subordinates(foresters), supervisory staff and seniorofficers would be equipped with hand-helddevices capable of voice, data and geocoordinatetransmission. The task force hasalso proposed that approximately 10% ofthe lion population should be fitted withGPS collars.
