Chile signs important space cooperation agreement with Brazil
Chile and Brazil signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Space Activities for Peaceful Purposes, to promote joint programs and projects in space matters within the framework of the State during the visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as reported by the Chilean government through its Presidential Press page.
The agreement was signed by the Ministers of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, Luciana Santos, and of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile, Aisén Etcheverry, specifying the intention of both countries to cooperate in space activities by carrying out projects of common interest. Both countries will identify areas to develop joint programs and projects by their respective national policies on space policy.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric emphasized the importance of partnering with Brazil to accelerate Chile’s space program. He highlighted the opportunity to collaborate on research into climate change and other planetary issues.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed pride in sharing Brazil’s space expertise with Chile. He emphasized the role of government in space development, criticizing private sector initiatives like Elon Musk’s focus on Mars colonization while neglecting Earth. Lula argued that space infrastructure is essential for addressing global challenges, particularly climate change.
The cooperation between Brazil and Chile marks a significant step forward for both countries in space exploration and aligns with a growing global focus on space-based solutions to Earth’s problems.
