Planning Commission under Government of India proposes the establishment of The National GIS which is envisaged as a fundamental component of India’s critical democratic and governance infrastructure, providing support to many aspects of the national economic and governance process and where provide a national GIS programme, infrastructure, policy, and applications would benefit the nation.

The National GIS is thus “mission critical” for national and state government, enterprise level decision makers, and provides a foundation for future public/private collaboration within India and internationally.

A National GIS is expected to provide a well maintained collection of geospatial datasets to allow national use, published via standard web services so that government and private sector entities and citizens have the same national view of GIS data.

So, does India need the National GIS?

If yes, what factors would facilitate it and what could stop it?

If no, then why not?
